In April 1988, Professor Chien Wang and a few other graduate students from the University of Washington began to feel the urgent need to pass on their language and culture to their children. To that end, they rented some classrooms near the University of Washington and began formally educating the next generation in acquiring the Traditional Mandarin (繁體) language under the name Evergreen Chinese School.

Mingyuan (明遠), was later proposed by Professor Wang, inspired by the famous quote by Zhuge Liang (諸葛亮) of the Three Kingdoms. “Only by foregoing superficial fame and fortune can one attain one’s true aspirations; only through quiet contemplation can true inner peace be found” (淡泊明志 寧靜致遠). The school’s mission was simple and pure: to allow Traditional Mandarin language and culture to flourish through quiet dedication and hard work. This name continues to this day, and represents a long standing heritage of teaching Traditional Mandarin language and culture in Seattle.

Evergreen Mingyuan School is a non-profit organization. Over the years, we have maintained a high level of education by keeping our classes small and hiring dedicated teachers. Besides teaching heritage students, our school now includes Traditional Mandarin language classes for non-heritage speakers. We treat all members equally regardless of their socioeconomic and cultural background to those who love and treasure Traditional Mandarin culture.
